“Southern Rising” Live On MasticadoresUSA

HistoryDaily.org via Pinterest (circa 1910 Kitchen)

snow lays reticent, a virgin blanket

covers nature like a gentle quilt

thick white breath journeys on

through dated chimney stones

black iron stove warms mama

making flour bread in iron skillet

tiny portions of salt pork, browns

smell of fresh coffee clings to walls

grits gurgle in pot, red-eye gravy

sizzles in sauté pan, a southern relish

Thank you Nigel for reading I truly appreciate it. There is nothing like a big southern breakfast with home made buttermilk biscuits. My aunt even cooked fish to go along with the eggs, bacon and red-eye gravy. When my mom cooked she put a lot of love in it. Have a blessed weekend my friend. Big hugs, Joni

  2. Amazingly beautiful! Joni, your words are powerful, spiritual and soul reaching. The work of a true artist. Love and blessings to you both! Have a jolly good weekend!

Thank you for all your gracious words Francis. That is quite a beautiful compliment and it touches my heart. My mom was such a wonderful cook and she always made sure that there was plenty of food for everyone. She made all her cakes, cookies and pastries from scratch, nothing store bought in her house. She showed much of her love to her family through her cooking. You two enjoy your day and many blessings to you both. Big hugs, Joni

      1. You’re very welcome 🙏 Joni.

Brilliant poetry, Joni. Honestly, I’m hungry just reading this (no kidding)! Such detail and so much love is apparent in this piece. Beautiful, skillful writing as always, my friend. Congratulations! 🙂

Thank you Mike, your words are so kind. I am such a fan of yours that this means a lot. It is almost hard to describe the kitchen when my mom was cooking. She would be baking and cooking a meal at the same time. She didn’t buy cakes and cinnamon rolls, everything was rising while she was cooking what we were about to eat. There were always pots cooking peas that were shelled the day before too. Thank you Mike I truly appreciate your reading and your comment. Hope your day is a blessed one. Big hugs and love, Joni

Oooooh Joni. Breakfast is ready. I can hear the sizzle in your words and smell the coffee. Happy Saturday. Allan

    1. jonicaggiano says:

I am so glad that you enjoyed it Allan. Also glad you can smell the coffee that means I did my job as a poet. haha Being in a military family the coffee was always on at five. Thank you so much for reading my friend. I will have a good day and you do the same. Blessings to you two, Joni

  6. Terveen Gill says:

Beautifully written, Joni. Straight from a hungry tummy to a full heart. 🙂

    1. jonicaggiano says:

Thank you so much Terveen. What a sweet comment. My mom could out cook any southern cook when it came to breakfast except maybe my aunt. She was a nervous cook so we were not allowed to be in the kitchen and I would have loved to have learned how to replicate her dishes but I can’t even make flour bread which was wonderful. Yes, you could certainly eat this meal for dinner too. Thank you for reading and your sweet comment Terveen, have a blessed night and a great weekend. Sending great big hugs, Joni xoxoxo

Tim thank you so much your comment is the one a poet wants to hear the most. Being pulled in, and feeling hungry means I did my job. You can’t really find her kind of cooking too many places. Thank you dear friend. Love, hugs, and blessings 🦋🌹🙏

If not I wonder why you have not submitted one of your pieces. I believe both MasticadoresIndia and MasticadoresUSA are open for submissions. It would be nice to read you at one of these sites. There is also MasticadoresRomania. All these editors are so kind. Blessings my friend. Have an amazing week, Joni

      3. These are all things to think about, Joni. I find lately I am very busy, often spreading myself a bit too thin. Let’s see how things work out. Thank you for thinking of me, my dear friend. ❤️

      4. jonicaggiano says:

I understand truly. I should not be on all three social media. I am also writing too. Please let me know if your situation changes. Big hugs and love, Joni 🌹
