snow lays reticent, a virgin blanket

covers nature like a gentle quilt

thick white breath journeys on

through dated chimney stones

black iron stove warms mama

making flour bread in iron skillet

tiny portions of salt pork, browns

smell of fresh coffee clings to walls

grits gurgle in pot, red-eye gravy

sizzles in sauté pan, a southern relish

    1. Thank you Nigel for reading I truly appreciate it. There is nothing like a big southern breakfast with home made buttermilk biscuits. My aunt even cooked fish to go along with the eggs, bacon and red-eye gravy. When my mom cooked she put a lot of love in it. Have a blessed weekend my friend. Big hugs, Joni

    1. Thank you for all your gracious words Francis. That is quite a beautiful compliment and it touches my heart. My mom was such a wonderful cook and she always made sure that there was plenty of food for everyone. She made all her cakes, cookies and pastries from scratch, nothing store bought in her house. She showed much of her love to her family through her cooking. You two enjoy your day and many blessings to you both. Big hugs, Joni

    1. Thank you Mike, your words are so kind. I am such a fan of yours that this means a lot. It is almost hard to describe the kitchen when my mom was cooking. She would be baking and cooking a meal at the same time. She didn’t buy cakes and cinnamon rolls, everything was rising while she was cooking what we were about to eat.     1. Thank you so much Terveen. What a sweet comment. My mom could out cook any southern cook when it came to breakfast except maybe my aunt. She was a nervous cook so we were not allowed to be in the kitchen and I would have loved to have learned how to replicate her dishes but I can’t even make flour bread which was wonderful. I don’t know what would put my mom in the mood to cook but she was often sober and would cook the most wonderful things for the family. She was an amazing cook.
