Death Toll Rising

moon slips warily

inside a red envelope

refusing to come out

owls cough up hoots

praying over owlets

the sun wears blinds

anoles unable to warm

fire ants stinging

eating tough flesh

trees halt, drop leaves

eggs left, nest cold

birds fall, sky red

in protest of the dead

We continue to pray for the brave Ukrainian people and for all leadership.  If we are sitting safely in our homes this evening we are indeed blessed.

  1. A beautiful piece, Joni. I completely agree with you. Praying for Ukraine. 🇺🇦💙💛 Sending you love, hugs, and blessings, my friend. 🤗❤️

    1. Thank you so much Jeff, I really appreciate your reading and glad you agree. It is getting so out of hand, the cruelty that has been placed on civilians is hard to hear about. I am glad that the locals are trying to record as much of the brutality as possible. Sending love, hugs and blessings back my friend. Have a wonderful Holy Week as well. xoxo Joni

  2. There are a lot of dramas in a small bird nests. And often it is life and death. And spring is the best time for them and the old abandoned nest on the tree outside my window is being checked out by a pair of birds recently.

    1. There is indeed a lot of drama my friend, so true. I would love to read one of your stories about this, I bet it would be a beautiful one. Blessings to you my friend. Big hugs and love, Joni

    1. Thank you dear Holly for reading. It is very hard indeed. I know you have a tender heart and see so much sadness within your field that stays in your heart. Just another dreadful sadness to add. Blessing this Holy Week and sending you my love Holly. xoxoxoxoxo Joni

    1. This is a very good point my friend. They have done so much harm and many of their own people do not want to fight the Ukrainians, so again how right you are. I hope you have a blessed day and thank you so much for reading. Sending love to you and your family. Joni xoxoxxo

    1. Thank you so much Tim, I always appreciate your reading and kind words, they mean a lot. Blessings to you and your family this Holy Week. Love, Joni xoxoxoxo

  3. It seems like we can only pray real hard for all these atrocities to end. Russia is in the hands of a brutal dictator. And unfortunately it had to be Ukraine for the entire World to see this reality. My hard aches for the Ukrainians.

    1. So true dear Gül it is so heartbreaking and when we can see how they are going after civilians so purposely it is evil. I agree praying is what we can do. Sending my love to you all. A blessing this Palm Sunday dear friends. ❤️🤗🦋

  4. Good imagery as usual Joni. Sadness envelops the world right now. The Ukraine is facing unimaginable horrors from a country that does not believe in the rule of law. Putin is this era’s menace. Stay well. Allan

    1. Thank you so much Dawn I am delighted that you read my piece and happy that you liked it. Wishing you a day filled with love and joy my friend. Big hugs, Love Joni

  5. Oh my…the universe weeps..this invasion and massacre have upset the fragile balance of…..everything..of our sanity… to feel so helpless.. Prayer is something we can all do.. but your words remind us that the earth is shaken to the core with theses tragic unfolding examples of hate and power and inhumanity to humanity… It’s frightening to think of how easily it could escalate to…world wide tragedy… Hugs you tight and soothes your bleeding eyes🙏❤️❤️

    1. Hello my dear sweet friend. Karima I know with your sensitive and loving heart this is difficult. Yes I feel helpless in many ways, and we can pray which does help and is the one thing that may make a difference but listening to the news – your words are spot on Karima. “It’s frightening to think of how easily it could escalate to…world wide tragedy…”it hurts our hearts especially when we are talking about targeting children. Monsters, why is our world full of monsters?

Big hugs and lots of love to you my very gracious hearted friend. ❤️🤗🦋🙏🙏🙏

    1. I hope you are doing well beautiful Tiffany. I know things are crazy right now. I honestly feel like we have no idea where the planet will even in a month from now. Love you sweetie. ❤️🤗🦋🦋🙏🙏🌺

    1. Thank you Cindy. I really appreciate that kind comment. It is devastating and I keep thinking this must have been how it felt when Hitler started his campaign of slaughtering the innocents. It is hard to think too much because it is paralyzing to think that could be us being bombed. Lots of love to you too Cindy, love to your beautiful family too. ❤️🤗🙏

      1. You’re so welcome always Joni. This is such an atrocity and I liken it to that too but you did justice to all of us and we must carry on as we limp through this unspeakable tragedy. Blessings of love for Easter. 💖💖
