Spirit Moose
antlers strong, bent
roaming in the veins
of earth’s shadows
whispers ride the reins
giant the spirit moose
spraying his grey mist
seeking refuge from
hoarfrost’s imminent fist
pure albino coat, proud
sun spirals in the east
cold rains upon earth
frozen by this spirit beast

This is a simple piece I wrote after reading about how two hunters killed one of these gorgeous creatures to mount. They gave it back to the Native Americans so they could honor its spirit.

A truly lovely, contemplative poem, Joni. Reminds me of the local Native American tribes in my area (Navajo, Ute) and their mythologies regarding spirit animals and the importance of being part of nature and respecting all life. I have a photograph from my trip to Grand Teton National Park in 1996 that shows three moose standing in the Snake River, with the Tetons in the background. They stood there for about an hour while I made several images of the sunrise over the peaks in the same place Ansel Adams and many other legendary nature photographers stood. Moose are fascinating creatures, indeed. 😊🫎

I am definitely going to check your photography and see if those shots are published. Wow you must have picked an amazing day, standing with other great photographers and painters. I am sure you remember reading D. Wallace Peach’s, “The Tales of The Seasons Weaver,” as your gorgeous poem was used in the book. In that first scene which was the hunters who were tracking and eventually killed the spirit beast. Honestly, that’s scene for me was so brilliant and made you hold your breath, you’re there in the forest with the creature and rooting for it to survive. I am sure that you have heard lots about spirit animals where you live and find that really fascinating. I hope I can find the photos you discussed on your website. Oh my gosh, Mike thank you so much for sending that magistic photograph to me. What a staggering shot in terms of the size of the Teton mountains against the landscape as well as the capture of the three moose. You were brave to be that close to them in the wild. They are massive animals and and could do a lot of damage. You should publish this photo on your site, my friend. Scott and I were just in awe of that amazing scenery. We have never had the pleasure of going there. Big hugs my friend.

Dearest Tiffany, It is so lovely to hear from you. Thank you, and I am glad that you also have an appreciation for that majestic creature. These all white creatures are rare now and it is hard to believe that some people would actually want to shoot these animals. Back in 2017 National Geographic published an article by Sarah Gibbons about an unbelievable video of one of these amazing creatures by A Swedish politician, Hans Nilsson. When he published the video the police immediately wanted to find and kill this animal. So thankfully this man, Hans Nilsson got a petition created and circulated and succeeded to get more than 14,000 signatures to save this rare animal. Now there are more of these animals spotted.
