“Worn Slap Out” Now On Spillwords

Photo and Poem ©️2024 Joni Caggiano

Worn Slap Out

Ms. Egret lay her scrawny neck upon my braless chest
Tears sting like chigger bites for her lonesome sorrow
White fluff, her hatchling falls over yonder from her nest
I’ll fetch her from between the cattails sun-up tomorrow

Ma is looking for my fresh-skinned catch, a small catfish
Hushpuppies nip and growl when they hit the sizzling lard
I’d be blowing away mosquitos, I reckon, if I had one wish
Or maybe living in high cotton where life won’t be so hard

  1. Beautiful, Joni. ❤ Yes, in dreams, even poor folk soar.

Thank you Tim. I know right! I am fortunate we have a nice home and three acres and the most gorgeous view. I am starting to feel like this is home. It was an adjustment. You know I have everything I want and need and I have never wanted to be rich in the material world but comfortable. I have seen what money can do to people and all the money in the world does not make any one happy. I am sure you know what I mean. I think you and I are probably a bit a like my friend. Sending you my appreciation and love as always. Joni 🦋🖤

This was such an engaging read. Coming of age, finding that space to exist. I loved the use of that dialect and the down to earth language. Gave the piece a very homely, grounded appeal. Love how nature always ignites your creativity. A wonderful piece Joni.

Thank you, dear Nigel. Nature is like a drink may be to others. It soothes the soul and relaxes the mind. I find myself completely engulfed in the visuals that something like a large red-headed woodpecker trying to get its large body on the bird feeder long enough to munch on some seed before it falls off, while on the other side is a tiny baby wren that has found the small hole in the plastic surrounding the feeder made to look like a wooden church, climbs into the hole and just eats as long as it wants to without fear. Maybe that is what older age does to one. Although it has always been a refuge for me as you know my dear friend. Thank you for your kind words as always Nigel, that is how I feel about your brilliant storytelling, you are in your element, creating stories that can stop one’s breath like the best-trending thriller on TV. Big hugs and love from both of us. ❤️

My goodness, Joni, this is a wonderful poem! I left a note for you at Spillwords, but want to say here that this piece reminded me of my time in SC and LA, where the customs and lexicon were so different from where I was raised here in the Southwest. Brilliant, engaging writing, my friend! 😊
