Sorrowful Surrogate

Ripe the delicate fig I place inside my hungry mouth,
its flavor heightened by a residue of sugar left on midnight lips
sliding sluggishly down with laudanum and brandy

Opening a cross-window, I watch your tall silhouette move
sated, down the dark street with your tricorne hat
as our smells fused with the oils of our young bodies,
I now watch them drifting in a cloud of expectation

Returning to our nest, where birds shed feathers,
for our comfort, left with imitations, by the flute and clarinet
now I lay in the fog of humidity, that holds my breath prisoner

Rest is like a midnight rider that never makes his post,
slumber will not be a visitant in this barren, gloomy, and neglected flat
far-reaching is the idealistic smile, that slides off the moon
its right eye catching on the twinkling of a star gone amiss

My heart exposed like a fawn shrouding in fear in the des bois
for I am your young lover who must wait in the black abyss
deliriums do create a sorrowful surrogate, for a fire that no longer burns

  1. Beautiful and tragic – the hope of love that never stays – poor girl, but a self-inflicted wound. I can visualize the dreary flat, well done, Joni! ❤️

    1. Thank you so much for your kindness and for reading and commenting. I do so appreciate it. I am delighted that you see the meaning behind this poor young girl situation. Waiting and waiting and perhaps wasting her life in a sad place when her lover leaves. Have a blessed day. Love Joni

  2. Absolutely wonderful. Tragic, sensual, and really beautiful.

    1. Oh thank you dearest Ishita you are so kind. I am grateful you enjoyed those lines. Just a little bit of a different style I was playing with, an eighteenth century piece. I hoped it would work. Your gracious words are always like music to my ears.

Thank you my friend. Your support is so appreciated.

Hope all is well with you and all your loved ones. Have a wonderful and blessed day. Love to you kind friend. ❤️💕🌹 Joni

  3. A beautiful elegance to your words. Steeped in imagery and suggestion, they create a marvelous moment in a wonderous world. Evocative and emotional! Well written, Joni! 💖😘

    1. Thank you my dear friend. Today has been a frustrating day and then I see this. Thank you my kind friend. Love ya, sleep well. ❤️💕🌺🤗

  4. That’s so beautiful my dearest Joni. It’s fragrant, actually it engages all senses, it’s colored, it has a magnificent taste. Painful at the end. Almost ghostly.

    Excellent write. Bravo honeybun.

    1. Oh dearest Button thank you for your thoughtful comment. I appreciate it so much. You certainly got it as it is supposed to feel almost ghostly. My first century piece (18th), hence the hat, the laudanum, and the flat. An addict living for what I call the (in-between time). Until this kept woman sees her man that she loves she lives in the deliriums brought on by her alcohol and drugs.

I also hope you got my other comments last night which I didn’t see before as I have used all my comment space and they start to drop off all together on my notifications on my phone reader. I am sending you a short email today). Thank you for your sweet support my dearest Button. Love you Honeybun ❤️💕🤗🌺

      1. Honeybun, you are so welcome. The piece is really superb. I like the setting and the depth of the feelings you express.
I did get your comments sweetheart. “I have used all my comment space” I have never heard that there is a limited comment space. There are bloggers with 300 comments on a post. Anyway, there are so many things that can go wrong on WP and we all have to do the best we can. Please do not worry about. I did not think any minute that you ignored my comments.
Got your email. I will reply soon. There is a lot to talk about.
        Sending you love and blessing.

      2. Hi sweet Button. Thank you for being understanding about my issues on line. I have 2.8k comments and the person I chatted with, who was very helpful told me I was at my limit for space. So comments literally start to drop off if you don’t answer them pretty quickly. Now I am trying to get to them pretty fast. I know I told my husband who followed the chat that someone like you has hundreds of comments on a blog and you always comment back. Either way I don’t understand unless I need to upgrade to a business site. Everyone has been very understanding and WordPress is always responsive when I chat with them. Honestly some days like Sunday I really try to limit my time on line as that is God’s day. No hurry on responding my dear friend. I just wanted to touch base. I am sending you lots of love, hugs and blessings. Yours honeybun ❤️💕🤗💖
