Calabash Pipe

Photo by GEORGE DESIPRIS on – Poetry by Joni Caggiano on 7/5/20

I walk through dark waters and study them turning memories to blood
the full moon shines her dreamless side down, with disdain for the divine
moving into the shadows and the grays of night, with its cautious arms
two lovers lost their way, in the swamp, where the cypress grows into the air
tattered pieces of white crinoline torn, lay in tangles by the marshes deadwood
brown was the calabash pipe, of her lover, floating days later, nigh the edge

only curiosity seekers roam the eerie grounds as the bullfrogs sing
five dollars a ticket hoping to see a sign of my visitors who vanished so long ago
the smell of sweet tobacco works its way passed the cattails and smoke rises
gardenias have not a bud near, and yet the sweet smell floods the tree line
when the full moon kisses the water’s edge, the couple is seen
strolling a lovers’ path that never was, as he smokes and smells her flowers

  1. Dark and smoky, tangled with emotions struggling to find their way along the twisting paths with only a few sprinkles of light fallen from above to guide them through the thickness.

    1. Hi dear Ishita, I do appreciate your reading and commenting on my work. You are a sweet heart. Thank you so much. I am glad that you enjoyed it. I had fun writing it and found it easy to picture the scene in my head. I spent a lot of time playing in the woods when I was little and I had a wild imagination then too. Thank you for all the love and hugs as I can feel them my friend. Know I am sending them back as well. Love and hugs to you too and all your family. Joni xoxoxoxo

    1. Thank you my friend, I am delighted you liked it. I really enjoyed the photos too, thank you. I think it adds a lot to the poetry, story, etc., when the photography accents the piece. I have simply run out of my own work and there are a lot of talented photographers that have their work available. Both of these photographers were really talented I thought. I am so glad you enjoyed it. Give your wife a hug for me. I hope the two of you are able to spend time on the water with friends now. Things are very strict here now, more so then they have ever been. My sweetie and I stay home except for our trips to the grocery store and of course we wear a mask and are very careful. We just pray about the situation and we don’t live in fear. We can take walks and exercise inside. We are very blessed to be each others best friend. Take good care of each other and blessings to you both. Love Joni

      1. Thank you my dear friend! I hope the situation in NC improves but you and your husband are doing the right thing. We must all be careful because this bug is still out there. We are not leaving the province and my wife is looking for a nice place near the water where we can spend a few weeks this summer and it is a hot, hot summer here…take good care and my love to you and your husband, enjoy each others company which is the best company you can have. My wife and I do too, after all, we are usually doing things together and waiting to see what happens at the end of all this pandemic situation, but we, like you guys, are not living in fear but in the grace of God.
        Bless you,

      2. Oh thank you for this very kind note Francisco. We are so blessed to be with our best friends and not living in fear. We are embraced with the full armor of God. Your note was dear to me and my husband, thank you. I hope your wife finds a nice place where you can enjoy the water. It tends to bring out the creative side in me as well. It sounds like a wonderful idea that she has and a way to safely enjoy the summer. You two are in my prayers. Blessings to you both. Joni

  3. That is magnificent my dearest Joni. Beautiful, deep, images melt into each other. I have this feeling that sometimes one object represents another and perhaps vice-versa.
Yes, it is a magnificent piece honeybun. You are talented and blessed.
