“Freezer Burn” Live Featured on IndiaMasticadores

Snow had fallen for five days in a row, and we were no longer allowed outside.  Yet, my hateful sisters, Ruth and Elizabeth, somehow obtained mom’s approval to drive to the deli right up the street.  Mom gave them money for sandwiches and hot cocoa.  They both stuck their tongues out at me as they walked out the door with their red cashmere coats and hats.

Later that day, I reflected on my tenth birthday party which had passed two days ago.  No one had shown up, and mom had repeated herself hoarse, “Sarah, it is the weather.  No one came because of the snow.”  I found that odd as everyone lived within two streets of our home.  It was also strange that mom hadn’t decorated our enormous house.  Even my sisters were playing in the snow and getting dirty, which they rarely did.  I had sat long enough to blow out candles on a store-bought cake, and then both of my parents had excused themselves.  I found myself sitting alone on my tenth birthday after a five-minute celebration. Lost and glum, a faint knock startled me, and I opened the door to find Grandma Faith smiling back at me.

Grandma was the only person in the world who truly loved me, and I loved her with all my heart.  She quickly looked around and said, “What on earth is going on here? Where are all your friends, your parents, and the twins?”

A story written from a child’s perspective.  I want to thank the Editor, Abhilash Fraizer,  of IndiaMasticadores for publishing my story.  Inspired by a true story.   To continue reading, please go to IndiaMasticadores and I hope everyone has a blessed weekend.  Big hugs, Joni

Oh thank you Tim. What people do to children. However forgiveness is a blessing as none of us are perfect and to let go of bad feelings, I have found that forgiveness truly helps. Blessings to you and your family my friend. ❤️🙏❤️

You are very welcome, my friend. We are at the point where we are starting to think about getting another dog. It’s hard to imagine but we said we’d never get another animal. We were so heartbroken and still see her in our dreams and the corner of our eyes, but we’re finally gonna seriously think about it. They give us so much and I know if anyone knows that you do. Thank goodness there is those of us that love and appreciate our environment. Seriously thank you for your part and not only preserving nature, but being such a friend to nature. ❤️🙏❤️

A beautiful and touching story, Joni, where compassion comes to the rescue and faith (both literally and figuratively) saves the day. This one resonates deeply with that little ten-year-old Mike who, like Sarah, felt abandoned and unloved (and still does). I’m glad Sarah had her grandma and her faith. Thank goodness for happy endings. 😊

Mike, that is based on a true story. Rest assured my friend you are certainly loved by Scott and I. I wrote that story based on how I felt growing up as well. I know that feeling Mike. I am grateful for my husband, daughter and grandchildren. Without them I would have no real family but I meet people I love and chose them to be my family like you. Love from the both of us. ❤️🤗❤️
