flowers lift every blossom high
toward sunday’s somber sky
exquisite hat, emits long sigh

young’uns loud, dirty pants
cardboard fans begin to dance
choir holds ceremonial stance

tears spin, I sow a song, best I can
welcomes arise by awkward man
memories shift like mourning sand

listen to preacher, job he’s doing, bad
he never even knew my dad
flowers jump off my dress, how sad

this daughter talks about real times
how war, alcohol, and misery binds
no talk of my abuse, or broken lines

  1. This is so touching.so sad… such a tragedy. You’re such a strong soul to even walk through these lines. To pen these emotions, takes tremendous fortitude.. Thank you for sharing. The impact your bravery has on those reading will be immeasurable. 💙😞❤️

    1. Dearest Nigel, thank you so much for your kind words. It is not easy, but if I make the smallest difference in someone’s life I feel like I must share my experiences. Thank you also for you extremely generous repost and words there as well. Always sending my love and hugs, Joni

  2. So brutal and powerful, Joni. It reads almost like a dream sequence, and it hits hard. My dad killed himself, so I can relate to this piece. I also lost a friend to suicide in 1991. I’m all too familiar with these dark thoughts. Your poetry always hits its mark. Well done, my friend.

      2. You are gracious dear Cindy and I hope that you are finding time to enjoy your family, friends, clients and your animals. You work so hard and there is nothing wrong with that, but I have slowed down because I want to enjoy each day because I don’t know about you but everyday goes by faster than the last. I think that comes with age and it gets difficult to slow down but since our move to Virginia I am definitely making time. We even sit on the porch at night and watch the cows in the pasture and the sunsets. Sending hugs and love to a wonderful lady!

    1. Thank you dear Belladonna. I continue to hope that by telling the truth about my life that others will know they are not alone. Everyone is carrying a bag of pain upon their shoulders, no one is free of that, but this kind of pain just knowing others have been through the same thing can be a blessing. People can change through positive influence – keep writing about it my friend. Love Joni

    1. Hi Allan, thank you for reading. There is sadness amongst the beauty but we get out and find the beauty like you. There is much to behold in this world and I love traveling along with your ability to capture even tiniest flower among the thorns my friend. Big blessings to you and your wife and family, Allan.
