The Earth Has Feelings Too

Poem by Joni Caggiano on December 20, 2021 – Photo by Johannes Plenio (Unsplash) 34 second read

silence is an earless solitary creature
without words alone in the damp eye of dusk

a red clock balances barren time even
if its long arm is short and bluebirds boast

words fly back to you like a memory
of winds blowing in circles catching leaves

hummingbirds hover backward when
cherished souls like white doves rise to heaven

love is a feeling I write, to embrace it
my medium molding, as it recites blue memories

thin parchment is the case of a grave
for sadness is written upon a buried vessel

finding solace in a hug of a white oak
a sunup dance with fairies in a morning’s mist

trees caring enough to clap for us
hoping we will stop the chaos and find a reason

writing is a reward, meek joys, and prayer
helping us to love our precious earth each season

  1. Good imagery Joni showing how much we need nature and that we need to take better care of this world. We would all miss those moments of green springs, soft summer zephyrs, rustling fall leaves and even the soft sounds of falling snow (yes, you heard me right). We will be off for a forest walk today to immerse ourselves in nature. Stay well and hugs to you and your family. Allan 🤗

if its long arm is short and bluebirds boast

words fly back to you like a memory
of winds blowing in circles catching leaves”

      1. It truly is isn’t it and yet by 2050 according to many scientists we may be looking at something like that. Thanks for understanding the importance of this piece it means a lot Cassa. Hugs and love, Joni

  4. A brilliant and heavenly poem Joni and so perfect for attitude changes for the new year! Sending loving hugs with festive coffees and pastries for the ultimate inspired wakeups! 💞🥮🥐🍮🍮🔔🎶🪵🔥

    1. Oh how very kind of you. It means a lot as busy as you are to send such a kind and loving email. The pastries and coffee are wonderful. I made some scones from a recipe AOC had on line a while back the other night. It makes eight. I ate five and my husband ate three, over a period of two days. I am back in the gym vaccinated and wearing a mask and it feels great. Many wishes for a bright and beautiful Christmas filled with the love of Christ. Sending you eight scones in a basket filled with love and hope for you and all your loved ones for Christmas. Of course fresh pressed coffee ☕️ is accompanying the basket. Love ❤️and many hugs, Joni

      1. You are so sweet Joni! You and those fairies are pushing Santa and his Elves away from Christmas. There is a resolve.. Santa can have the fairies and you can have the elves. Stay safe sweetie! Cheers! 🪵🔥🪵

      2. Sounds like a fair trade. You do have a point. Santa may be behind. I will tell them to pack their thimbles and head north. Sending you great big balloons filled with stocking stuffers and love. ❤️🤗🥰☕️ Merry Christmas to you and all those you love. ❤️

      3. Tell Santa that the switch is to help the climate change. Santa will understand. The fairies are feather light and more magical and they can help zap Santa from one place to another with the hospitalities of coffee and treats. I am sure you can come up with work details and ideas for the Elves.. maybe a rock band. 🎶🎸

      4. All excellent ideas. I send them out to help a friend when they are sick. If you think the elves can do that you got a deal. Your right with some great coffee and a little chocolate those elves can go all day. They read and make up fantastic stories in every language. Sending you love, hugs and lots of coffee. ❤️🤗🎄🦋☕️☕️☕️🥰🙏

      5. Glad to know too that you found the pastry recipe handy and delicious!🍮🍮🥐🥮🥖

      6. Yes indeed I have used several of your recipes this year. I enjoy AOC post very much. I have learned a lot about musicians too. Sending out a great big thank you for your friendship and wishing you and all those you love a big Merry Christmas. 🎄🦋🤗❤️🥰✝️✝️

  5. You write so beautifully dear Joni 🤗🌸💕 I am looking forward to reading much more of your creativity. Wishing you blessings in abundance and may your new year overflow with joy, love and peace

  6. Collectively, human existence is still essentially analogous to a cafeteria lineup consisting of diversely societally represented people, all adamantly arguing over which identifiable person should be at the front and, conversely, at the back of the line. Many of them further fight over to whom amongst them should go the last piece of quality pie and how much they should have to pay for it — all the while the interstellar spaceship on which they’re all permanently confined, owned and operated by (besides the wealthiest passengers) the fossil fuel industry, is on fire and toxifying at locations not normally investigated. As a species, we can be so heavily preoccupied with our own individual little worlds, however overwhelming to us, that we will miss the biggest of crucial pictures.

As individual consumers, far too many of us still recklessly behave as though throwing non-biodegradable garbage down a dark chute, or pollutants flushed down toilet/sink drainage pipes or emitted out of elevated exhaust pipes or spewed from sky-high jet engines and very tall smoke stacks — even the largest toxic-contaminant spills in rarely visited wilderness — can somehow be safely absorbed into the air, water, and land (i.e. out of sight, out of mind). It’s like we’re inconsequentially dispensing of that waste into a black-hole singularity, in which it’s compressed into nothing. Admittedly, I notice every time I discard of trash, I receive a reactive Spring-cleaning-like sense of disposal satisfaction. Hell, I even feel it, albeit far more innocently, when deleting and especially double-deleting email.

Perhaps it’s basically due to Earth’s relatively large size, which seemingly enables a general obliviousness, if not carelessness, in regards to the vast natural environment. Perhaps it’s somewhat poetic that B.C., which still harvests massive amounts of global-warming fossil fuel, including coal, is lately receiving such extreme-weather blows. I’ll never forget the astonishingly short-sighted, entitled selfishness I observed about four years ago, when a TV news reporter randomly asked a young urbanite wearing sunglasses what he thought of government restrictions on disposable plastic straws. “It’s like we’re living in a nanny state, always telling me what I can’t do,” he recklessly retorted. Humankind is still distracting itself/ourselves from our own burning and heavily polluting of our sole spaceship, Earth. If it were not for environmentally conscious and active young people who are just reaching voting age, matters would be even bleaker than they are.

    1. This is a very beautiful description of how most humans live. I agree with your conclusion at the end as well. My husband and I have been recycling, using rain water for outside and we drive a smart car. We compost and generate one large trash container per year of trash which is not recyclable or compostable. Having said that I am of the belief that it is too late already to stop climate change. However, with progressive young people being more active and educating others there is hope. We can slow down the destruction of our planet if enough is done. It is amazing how many people don’t take the disappearing bees more seriously. The fact that there are countless bee drone patents (metallic bees) and that so many people are not aware of this is sad. I think the biggest problem will be the lack of potable water in the world. We are slowly killing our self’s by killing the resources we need to survive.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a comprehensive comment to my poem. I do really appreciate it and also agree with it. I felt a bit badly about flying to see my daughter and grandchildren after not seeing them for a long time.

Just one more thing, thanks for the education on your site. It is a blessing to help people understand that we are indeed killing our planet. 🦋
      Hugs 🤗 Joni
