Robins Foraging and Memories

Poem by Joni Caggiano 02/01/21 – Photo by Jakob Owens – Unsplash

slicing my feet with memories sticking between my tiny toes
cold earth with her crackling leaves of brown and red
stuck in cotton and tobacco fields with memories he knows

leaves dancing in the sun while moist soil summons the birds
eating worms drowning in the water beneath the cover
same place you unearthed me, shaking, no ears for my words

closing my eyes, listening to the robins’ chorus as they do feast
standing on God’s earth, I find my strength, standing tall
years bounce like silly putty, hula hoops, and also you, my beast

washing, a sponge saturated with grief wringing her out like spit
firmly I grow roots sprouting from small but sturdy feet
my spirit dancing now with robins as an angel flies along for a bit

    1. You my friend certainly got much of this piece thank you so much for reading. My site started out as an adult child of alcoholics site. Still is really and I occasionally have poems about abuse I suffered. This is a memory about being sexually abused by an uncle. It is important for me to write about this stuff when those memories come back because it helps others to remember it is ok we did nothing wrong and we will have these memories even if we have had blessed lives eventually. You are a dear friend. Thank you for sharing your thoughts this is very helpful for me. I am sending love, hugs and prayers for an amazing week. Love ❤️ Joni

  1. I guess I didn’t get it totally right, but the loss and grief were real. I had an uncle that I think sexually abused some of my aunts, but my Mother saved me from him. We are English and so we don’t talk. I am glad you know that you did nothing wrong. I hope that someday the legal system put the abuser on trial instead of the abused. Sending you love and hugs and hope you have a wonderful week.

    1. Yes you did indeed pick up on much of what I was trying to express. Sorry about your Aunts. It is hard when you can’t talk to someone. As kids we don’t talk much either. You are right about the legal system. I was a Rape Relief and Sexual Assault Volunteer, who went through a lot of extensive training when we lived in Washington State. We supported the victims of rape from the initial report, through the Rape Kit and then when they gave their statements. I only saw one case where two very young women were raped repeatedly with a gun in their face by two men who actually got a conviction. I think one of the biggest reasons why was because I was with both of them when they gave their formal statements and they were identical. Of course I was just there for support. I was so proud of these girls. They were right out of high-school. Thank you for your kind support. I have a lot of friends in England, I think it is so beautiful in your Country. I am so glad we are friends. Have an amazing day my friend. Love Joni

    1. Oh thank you so much dearest Button for reading and your lovely comment.

“Two things: impeccable execution and mind blowing imagery.”

You don’t ever have to apologize to me. I don’t know how you have an extra moment and I think you are caught up anyway.
I love you too Button. I am sorry you didn’t win “piece of the year,” I couldn’t wait to get up and check early this morning. Being poet of the year is such a wonderful accomplishment.

I was glad to see Francisco featured however and was delighted to read what he wrote.

Have an amazing and creative day. I love you,
      Honeybun ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗💕💕

  3. So beautiful, how you are able to craft with words alone a situation and a feeling. It brings darkness to mind, but at the end – sunshine. Amazing work.

    1. Hello Dear Friend Jill – So happy to see you here, sorry you are having trouble being able to like my posts. Until I go to the Apple Store and get the new OS system installed it sounds like this will continue to be an issue. Thank you for your kind words, always. I just happened to be in the pending section on WordPress I have had to start going into to see some comments and likes. I am going to try and get to the Apple store on Friday if I can get an appointment as they were not able to do it over the phone, they tried for two hours. Hopefully that will fix this problem, I have other people that have told me they can’t like my post, so a lot of people going in are unable to like my work, frustrating but it is what it is. Sending lots of love and appreciation for you and your friendship my dear friend. Love you Jill xoxoxoxo

  5. This is, I think, a masterpiece, Joni. You have captured the courage and resilience of a child scarred by trauma. That line “firmly I grow roots sprouting from small but sturdy feet” brings tears to my eyes. Beautiful, my friend. It is an honor to know you. Love, A. <3
