Port of Call

Poem by Joni Caggiano 11/5/20 (Beautiful photo by Johannes Plenio with Pexels)

walking on sultry air toward the lights
lingering to smell the hidden sunshine
still treading so softly on these nights

tacit air is where you would caress me
where the darkness holds our imprints
into my heart my sailor from the sea

my beach house, and I did give you all
awake again as bodies spent exploring
in Wilmington’s once lonely port of call

my heart drops as I look toward all men
searching for your firm, and suntan face
wondering where darling have you been

every night I move like something dead
an empty horn without air I bleed silently
you did warn me, no promises you said

  1. oh Joni, those loves that were so luring and joyful as they fill our heart and even though there’s warning, leaving us in a puddle of yearning. So beautifully written. Good to see you see you here as I was wondering where you’ve been.. Hope you are doing well friend.. Hope you are having a great weekend!! ❤️❤️❤️Cindy

    1. Thank you my kind friend. I have been trying to submit work to new magazines and also just writing has been more difficult for me. So much tragedy in our world right now. Thank you for reading Cindy I really appreciate it. I hope your family is all well. I will be glad when the election is over and hope and pray that it is on the up and up this year. We need a big change. Our world needs taking care of and the US needs to be a part of that. Praying for better days. Love and hugs to you my friend. Please stay well and be careful. 💕❤️❤️😘

  2. I love this Jonikins! The form and phrasing are so beautiful. The longing woman peering out to sea in search of her love. We must be vibeing, because I have a poem with the same title scheduled to post next Saturday morning. It is not as lovely and is told from the sailor’s point of view, but it does seem quite the coincidence. Sending love through the salt air to you!

    1. Oh Brad that is so interesting. That is quite a coincidence isn’t it. I can’t wait to hear the sailor’s point of view. Thanks for telling me. I will be looking forward to that. Thanks for the love Brad. Sending lots of love back and some salt taffy. ❤️Jonikins

  3. Beautiful piece, friend! I love the beautiful imagery your words created, although it got sad towards the end but it was a lovely poem.
    Cheers💙🙏🥂

    1. Thanks Bulbul it is nice to hear from you friend. I hope you are doing well. I also hope your family is all happy and well. Things are crazy here in the US as I am sure you know. We are being careful. We are hoping for a new President and a better way of life the next four years. We are very grateful for what we have. We live a modest life we don’t need a lot of things to make us happy. The bridge between the rich and those so poor just continues to grow in the US. We are hoping to see this COVID slowing down too. Thank you for reading I appreciate it and am sending love, hugs and blessings to you and all those you love. 🤗💕❤️😘Joni

      1. Me and my family are well, Joni, thanks for your wishes.
Yeah, I know, there is great tension going on with the elections and everything. I am so glad to hear that you are fine and are taking necessary care. Stay safe, dear!
The bridge has widened huge here in India, too; the poor are getting poorer and the riches are getting more rich, everyday.
We hope the same, friend, COVID has sure turned life upside down, but I hope that it will pass.
Blessings and love to you as well, dearest. Take care🤗💕🙏😊💙

      2. I will my friend. I am so glad your family is well sweetheart. I am sorry to hear that about India. It is upsetting to see such poverty anywhere. It truly breaks my heart. We are being careful my friend. We have so many homeless in the US too. It is very disturbing. You take good care of yourself my sweet friend. Blessings to you too Bulbul and thanks for yours as we can never have too many blessings and love. You are such a sweetheart my friend. 😘🤗💕❤️Joni

    1. Thank you my friend. I love that photograph too. It is so inviting. Thank you for reading. You can smell the sun on people and clothing. I can, sounds like you know what I mean. Yea!! Have an amazing weekend my friend. Love ❤️ Joni

      1. It was great thank you for asking my friend. You take good care of you and your loved ones. Have a exciting day full of love. 💕❤️Joni

    1. Thank you Tiffany I really appreciate it. I have struggled a little lately writing. My first really blocked couple of days. So thank you very much, your kind comment is really gracious. My husband reminded me about all the stuff going on around us and he was probably right. A bit distracted. Hope you have a blessed Sunday and sending you buckets of monarchs and flowers and milk weed for the monarchs. Love ya Joni 🤗💕❤️🦋🦋🦋

    1. Thank you my kind friend. I am delighted you liked it and the ending. Funny how when we are young especially- we ache for love so impatiently where we should not, hope for that which doesn’t look promising and then we morn our loss.

Thank you so much for reading my friend. Hope you have been doing well and staying safe.

I am sending you lots of love, hugs, blessings and monarchs to make your day a blessed one. 🤗💕❤️😘Joni

      1. “Funny how when we are young especially- we ache for love so impatiently where we should not, hope for that which doesn’t look promising and then we morn our loss”.
        Very, very true.
You’re much welcome, Joni. Lots of love to you too. ❤

  4. Joni, you are such a masterful writer of such soft beauty and heartbreak

“lingering to smell the hidden sunshine
still treading so softly on these nights”

That image leaves me breathless with, the graceful reach for something that is so beautiful, something you would never want to let go of. And then the ending…
The entirety is perfection from beginning to ending. I read and reread.

“where the darkness holds our imprints”

    .., that place.
I love this Joni. It took me and held on, it kept every promise.
    Sending love and light
    ❤️🌸💖🌸

    1. Thank you so very much for your generous and gracious words. They offer me much validation and happiness coming from a writer of your caliber. I mean this truthfully. I bet you know what I am talking about as well, how sunshine lingers on our skin and clothing. That smell immediately makes me happy. Really thanks again Rachel, your words have deeply touched my heart. Sending love and a package wrapped with blue satin ribbon filled with inspiration and deep desire to start writing again. Please know I understand it would be a lot for someone who works to take on. I don’t know if I could do it. I retired very early and it is still hard for me to keep up. I don’t know how Gabriela does it but I am sure glad she does. 🤗💕❤️🦋🦋love Joni

    1. Thank you Anna. I saw I had comments from you but I had a headache and was tired. I like to write when I am fresh first thing in the AM when drinking coffee. That is quite the compliment Anna. Thank you for your sweet support. Yes I do remember that song very well. It had such a catchy tune. Thank you for the link too. I wouldn’t mind looking at the lyrics. I was actually a “good girl.” I protected myself that way. I lost my first love because I wasn’t ready. There is always someone who is more than happy to oblige. I still dream about him too. He was my refuge from the storm of my family life. I am not one who is easily talked into things and I am guessing you aren’t either. I met him in the sixth grade. I hope you have been well my friend. Sending all my love and hugs and appreciation for you. 💕❤️🤗Joni

      1. I know it must have hurt to lose that first love. But God had someone better in mind for you, Joni. Wishing you always love and happiness, A. <3

    1. You are too kind Stuart. Thank you for your sweet words they are appreciated and they mean a lot. Hope you have a beautiful sunny day there even if it is cold. We are still watching to see how everything is going to play out. I hope they don’t let Trump take every state he lost in to court. I don’t think they will. I guess we will have to be patient.
Give Valerie my best and you two take care of each other. I think I may have to finish your book on my own. Scott is really enjoying it but he is always busy working on some project and we are at another arch, just when you don’t want to put a book down. So I think I will finish today and still listen to him read the rest to me when he has time. Usually when I read a great book it takes three days at the most. I will write a review when I am done. You two stay out of trouble and be careful. Love y’all Joni 💕❤️

      1. Trump’s response was expected, and even some of his own party are now disagreeing with him. As long as he’s only wasting his own or supporters’ money, let him go to court; he won’t win, as he has no evidence.
I can empathise with Scott: I’m always busy, too! Enjoy the rest of the book, Joni. And many thanks for the offer to review; reviews make such a difference to the visibility of a book.

      2. I hope you are right about Trump. Yes I am grateful my sweetie does so much and we support one another as you and Valerie. He will understand as I can’t wait to see what happens next. Yes, I agree reviews are important. My husband was talking this morning about what an excellent writer you are and he loves your sense of humor. We really need to laughter in our world. Seriously you two be careful. To me the worst thing about having COVID would be not being able to see one another. We have neighbors who have lost family members and it is so sad. Sounds like your leaders are being very careful which is good. Be careful we are being very safe. Please give my best to Valerie. ❤️Joni

  5. What a wonderful poem honeybun. It’s pain, desire, loneliness, love.
    The finale is gorgeous.

“every night I move like something dead
an empty horn without air I bleed silently
you did warn me, no promises you said”

    Bravo! Sending flowers and love.
    Yours
    G (Button) )

    1. Thanks for the splendid flowers and love sweet button. I got them already and the house smells wonderful.

I am so glad you enjoyed this poem my friend. I liked the finale too. It made it a rather tragic piece. By the way I am working with submittable now per your suggestion. It is paying off slowly but surely my friend. Thank you for telling me about it too. Always helping others. Sending lots of love Button. Take care of yourself sweetie. Love ❤️ honeybun

      1. Oh, I am glad you got the flowers and the love.
Yes, that’s the way to go and it makes me happy to know you are doing that. It’s going to be great. I hope I get to go on after Thanksgiving too.
Good luck sweetheart. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
        Sending more love.
        G.

  6. Wow. You just slam dunked my heart with this one. Tears in my eyes….I know this feeling. So beautifully written, Joni. Sigh. Sending so much Love Your way! ❤️❤️❤️

    1. You are such a sweet heart. You brighten my day Katy with your sweet comments. You have such talent it is a great compliment but I just appreciate it. I think there are days we just feel such a boost from kind words like these. Thank you dear friend. Stay safe. Love and hugs, Joni

      1. Oh gosh….completely my pleasure, Joni! As my beautiful man says, “You’re talkin’ ’bout Yourself, now” and “I’m just speaking the truth!”. Thank You for Your Love and kindnesses as well!!! Sending You huge hugs!!! Stay safe, too! ❤️❤️❤️!

      2. Thank you my friend. I do appreciate you. ❤️💕🍁🧚‍♀️🧚‍♀️🦋🐉🐉 love you Joni. Your man sounds very sweet just like my man. We are so blessed. Yea, have a happy
        Day!!!

    1. Thank you so much. I am delighted you liked it. I appreciate your visit as well. I am always aware of our military and know they must be very lonely being young and away from home. Being from the South and living not to far from Fort Bragg when I was a teenager I meet some nice men who were always such gentlemen and you won’t find men with better manners. However I only dated one man in the military as I was still young. He was a real gentleman and would just take me to dinner and buy me flowers. He did express his feelings for me but that is as far as it went. I do like to write about men in the military as I feel it must be so lonely. Have an amazing but safe thanksgiving. Love and hugs 🤗💕❤️Joni

    1. You are very sweet but I don’t write perfect. I am always working on my poetry. Trying to speak truth not having to overthink. You write different everyone does. That does not mean it is not as good or that it doesn’t have just as much value. You are thoughtful and I am grateful for your compliment, honestly this touches my heart. May you be blessed my kind friend and just keep working as I do. Sending love and hugs braided into the hair of red mermaids that will leave your gifts of pearls tonight. Love y’all ❤️💕🤗😘🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️Joni

      1. Bubbles to you too, my friend. I hope that they world is being kind to you and life is blessing you in many ways my friend. Be safe and take care, love to you and all those you love my friend. Hugs Joni
