Secrets of Savannah

Photograph by Joni in Savannah – Poem by Joni – This poem is dedicated to Katy at forresting my cloud for making me smile with her happy paintings and poetry (51 second read)

timeworn, grey hair hangs curly by your wrinkled sides
which weave lines much like an old map of forgotten places
low to the ground as your limbs stretch out
from your vast insides where your substance lay
and the truth of your years we can easily see
for your secrets will never be in season, sweet Savannah
I sit at a café dressed up in yellow and blue
ordering collards, mustard greens, and the low country boil
your bottles of vinegar and hot sauce stir the sticky air
I lick my fingers as I salivate while tasting hot shrimp
the country boil still simmers in the middle of the table for two
sun barely hanging in the noose as her orange sunset tells lies
secrets born long ago in the brazen shadows of the dead
the cobbled streets and paved lots hide the graves of the poor
food in my stomach warms me as I head toward the black water
a lady of the night, I stay close to the edge of the dark stir
too much breast exposed and my red dress missing too many buttons
I also will simmer in my own juices like the country boil
made from the shrimp, crab, and the fresh catch of the day

    1. Thank you so much my friend. The city is like this with beautiful statues and lots of history wherever you look. This is not unfortunately the norm for the US. We tear too many things down instead of preserving our history. Have an amazing day. Love ❤️ to you and your loved ones. Joni

    1. Thank you Francisco. I really appreciate your kind words. I was definitely going for haunting and mysterious as that is how I see this place. Here is actually a place with history. It is almost 300 years old. You would have fun with your camera in this city. Love to you and your wife my friend. 💖🤗💕❤️Joni

  1. Just one fabulous line after another. This is beautifully written and places the reader directly in the middle of the world you have created. Great imagery and metaphor. One of your best for me!

    1. Hello my friend. How very kind of you to ask. I have had a difficult time with an old cervical injury/surgery from an old water skiing accident. After twelve cortisone injections in my trapezii I have some relief.

  3. I loved the artwork and the story. I love roaming the old places. I roamed old New Orleans and many cities in Central and South American. Artwork tell stories and thank you dear Joni for sharing. Have fun and be safe.

    1. Will do, you too my friend. I went to New Orleans once in a business trip. That place is where you can literally feel the past. It is hard to describe but my guess is you have a story or two in your collection about that City too. Have a blessed weekend my friend. Love and hugs Joni ❤️💕😘

      1. I do dear Joni. New Orleans, would be a great place to write a book. The city is ancient, filled with mystery and some tale. Would give you the energy to create.

      2. I totally agree. Not to mention all the characters there. How marvelous that would be. Have an amazing Saturday my friend. Love and hugs 🤗 Joni 🤗💕❤️

  4. So beautiful! I love Savannah, GA and its oaks dripping with Spanish moss! I was in Savannah in 1999. We stopped there on the way to Tybee Island and I feel in love with those huge trees and the moss hanging from them! It’s a place I’d love to retire to!
