Drink of Despair

Poem by Joni Caggiano – painting by Joseph Edward Southall – unsplash

oh, how thee has driven shards of blackened, soulless glass
into this faithful heart, for which you had so declared to love
to seize a life, from your beloved child, which was so cherished
knotted hair with anise and coriander lingered, and roses placed therein
hence the sun will set, but only once more for me, upon our lovers’ hill
father, you will find me dead upon this cold, dark and shadowed floor
never will I love another, my flesh will wither on a browning vine
you took the man betrothed to me, the man who would be mine

      1. Thank you my dear Joni, I send you and your husband blessings too and love from my little corner of Spain. Thank God we are doing well, it’s just very hot here lately but the sun shines brightly and the days are quite lovely!

      2. Oh I am so glad to hear it. We are in some serious heat here as well. I hope you and your wife were able to get away for a while by the water. We have talked about doing the same in a place that is not crowded at all. So glad to hear all is well with you two. Thank you for the kind note my friend. Hugs, love and prayers coming your way from our little corner of the south. ❤️💕🤗Joni

      3. Yes, we are leaving, I will not be here next week, will take our holiday and go to a little cove on the Mediterranean where there are not that many people and just refresh and renew. Wishing you and your husband a lovely rest of the summer with our love and peace,
        Francisco

  1. This is succulent! Beautifully crafted with archaic verbiage and a sense of soliloquy, we feel the beckoned call of one who seeks solace in the arms of her own demise. Wonderfully tragic and haunting, like a stain from a not well-remembered night. Some of your best, Jonikns! Well written!

    1. Thank you so much Brad. I am overwhelmed by your praise and always so delighted to get lovely feedback from you. This is humbling and truly appreciated. Thank you so much Brad for your support.

    wow. Beautiful work!

    1. I weave my past sadnesses into my work. It is a big compliment to me that you read this piece several times. Thank you for all your kind and supportive words. I am blessed today and for two plus decades now I have been with the love of my life. However I have had much sadness in my life. I grew from my challenges in my childhood and teenage years but I still draw from those feelings as a poet. Have a magical day my friend. Love ❤️ to you. Joni 🤗💕
