I took this picture of the statue of Virginia Dare in the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, North Carolina. She was the first person of English descent born in North America. (See below to read more about her history)
Virginia Dare was part of the Lost Colony located on Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The sculpture, created in Rome by Maria Louise Lander in 1859, took 100 years to eventually reach its final resting place in The Elizabethan Gardens. The beautiful marble statue, created as a tribute to Virginia Dare (who likely died as a young girl – the statue is an approximation as to what she might have looked like as an adult), spent two years at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean after being in a ship which wrecked off the coast of Spain. The statue also spent some time at the residence of Paul Green, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “The Lost Colony.” Paul Green was born in Lillington, North Carolina, which is about ten minutes from where we live. The White Doe is a poem written by Sallie Cotten, romanticizing the fate of Virginia Dare.
The name Virginia Dare is familiar–must have learned it in elementary school 🙂 Lovely photo–I’m curious what the statue is “wearing”. Is it some sort of sea creature?

I have a new prayer request, as I’m trying to keep my sense of humor–suddenly I have a plague of tiny ants (indoors), and I feel like “Job’s sister”, haha! Management scheduled someone to come out–Monday–which seems a long time to wait 🙂
One summer the red ants were so bad they were coming through the outlets. Climate change. Some summers they don’t die in NC. Praying 🙏 love 💕 Joni

Okay, I may be an idiot… I just reread the title–“White Doe”–so maybe that’s what surrounds her?
It is confusing. There is a famous poem written about this person in the sculpture called “White Doe”. Hugs sweetie 💖
Doe bring many questions to mind and her statue had an adventurous journey to say the least before arrival. White usually means pure, doe is a femal Deer. Could it be Native American Indian meening she was a pure soul and died at a very young age. Allsorts of thoughts come to mind.
Yes indeed. She was thought to have most likely moved to another area where a tribe of Indians lived. The head of the tribe was thought to have loved her very much. She was a young child when the colony disappeared. I want to read the poem but I haven’t had a chance yet. I hope she survived and had a sweet life. Thank you for reading my friend.
