Joni Jazz – Head Down Low

When I was a little girl, my parents encouraged me to sing. When they would drink a bit but still be able to function, they would take me to a building in Fayetteville, NC. I was in third grade. I had written lots of simple songs that were similar to those on the radio. Country western singers would entertain the military at this building. One day my parents pushed me forward toward the stage and told me to sing with the nice men. Luckily they were delightful and asked me what I could do. I said to them I made up songs, and they instructed me to start singing, and they would follow along. I sang several of my songs, and they followed me, but what I didn’t know at the time was that my voice was live on the radio.

Many of these men ended up being in the Grand Ole Opry. The crazy thing was that life was so upside down at home that this request, although unusual, did not make me nervous. I think my parents thought perhaps I could be a star. Either way, I will never forget that drive to this building, all these men on stage and my parents pushing me forward. It wasn’t until Monday at my elementary school when a woman who worked there told me she couldn’t believe it when she heard me on the radio. These gracious men had asked me to say my name in the microphone.

I still like to sing around the house some times but tend to lean more on the jazzy side of things. I wrote these lyrics this morning while my husband was walking the dogs and decided to record the first verse and chorus and share it with all my beautiful and many beloved friends on WordPress.

Thanks for tuning in. This is just me singing on a voice memo app, nothing fancy.

    1. Yes it was Virginia. They loved us and were proud of us. They were just both sick. Thanks for listening and reading Virginia. Have a truly blessed weekend. Love 💕 Joni

      1. You are very kind. We had a little group when I was very young. I use to write songs as well. Once when I was in third grade I sung with some guys on the radio when my parents pushed me toward the stage. They just said start singing and we will play right along. I found out years later at least two of these guys were in the Grand Ole Opry they were singing for veterans. Thank you for your compliments they mean a lot. I hope your having a great week. Love and hugs. Joni
