Saved From the Water

Wet sand slowly sinking beneath my weight
there is a mugginess to the air
it accompanies the endless rays of searing sun
so anxious of what powers lay beneath
the mystery of the ocean’s layers
never grasping how to swim, yet the gravity of the sea calls to me
Chilly is the rough briny water as it begins to rush upward with vigor
squalling waves surround me, and I feel the pulling sensation
up to my waist
enveloping and engulfing my body abruptly in the raw mystery
of this living fluid
I struggle with wide eyes open beneath the weight
forcing me downward
blinded by scrambled salty visions
secret forces hold me under
moving my arms forward in a panicky motion
I hit sand with one foot
my body exhausted I see myself drowning
thrashing against the massive muscle of the undertow
crying out to God while under his great creation
one last forceful endeavor made
with weakening spastic limbs
both feet felt sand suddenly underneath and again I was waist-deep
God had plucked me from the vast expanse
pushed me forward with his loving hand
given me a final boost
keeping my legs moving
until I reached the sandy beach
where I collapsed
in utter exhaustion
where no one
even
noticed

“The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.”
