The Garden of Gethsemane

Christ loved, was devoted, preached, and fed and did so many heal,
What trying thoughts, must have he borne, and carried with him here,
Could he feel the anger and the hate from the many, as he did thus kneel?

As Jesus prayed to his Father, Peter, John, and James fell  off to sleep,
Flesh took over, giving way to rest, instead of prayer per Christ’s request,
And two disciples who were so close, yet their betrayal would be steep.

He prayed that this cup would pass if in His Father’s will, he thrice did pray,
Surrounded by sadness and overwhelming torment, his burden oh so great,
Even still asleep, were his disciples, although just a small stone’s throw away!

Christ cried, “The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.” As in pain, he prayed,
“His sweat was as it were, great drops of blood falling down upon the ground.”
An angel came to offer strength for the great and lofty price must be paid.

Jesus visited this familiar spot to talk to his Father before he must soon face,
Immense suffering, and then to die as he lived, without sin or one blemish,
He knew we could not enter heaven without forgiveness, his amazing grace.

Thank you, Christ, for your love and forgiveness, while in my bed I do sleep,
For you never faltered, never failed, instead, you were as strong, as I am weak!
If I die before I do wake, I know that my forgiven soul you shall forever keep!

  1. Inspiring. We had a painting of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane at home when I was a child. That conveyed more of suffering and sacrifice than many a sermon to me. As you say, it was Christ’s strength that purchased Salvation for us. What a priceless gift! <3

    1. Yes, so true. I have thought about how Christ must have felt so often. People he had fed, preach to and baptized crying for his death. How betrayed he must have felt and yet he loved us still so much. Thank you for reading Anna. 💕🤗love and many a warm hug to you. Joni
